Why we sell C.H.I.

We are an authorized C.H.I. dealer, and C.H.I. is the line we put on more New Jersey houses than any other. The reason is unglamorous: the steel gauge and the section construction hold up to the way doors get used here. A garage door in Bergen County is the main door into the house for most families, opening and closing four or five times a day, through freeze-thaw winters and humid summers. Doors that are specified for looks alone do not last that duty cycle.

The ranges we fit most often

Planks

Horizontal grooves that give the face texture and depth. It reads as a modern flush door from the street but with more shadow line, which suits newer builds and renovated colonials.

Sterling

Glass and steel, minimal frame, the most contemporary thing in the range. Best on a house that already has clean lines — it will fight a traditional facade.

Skyline Flush

Crisp geometry with no raised panel at all. A common choice when the rest of the house has been modernised and the old raised-panel door is the last thing that has not caught up.

C.H.I. also make carriage-house and traditional raised-panel lines. If your street is mostly colonials, those usually sit better than any of the three above.

Insulation, and whether you need it

C.H.I. doors come non-insulated, polystyrene-insulated and polyurethane-insulated. The honest rule: if the garage is attached to the house, shares a wall with a room you use, or has a room above it, insulation is worth it and you will notice it in January. If it is a detached garage you park in and leave, it usually is not.

Insulated doors are also noticeably quieter and more rigid, which matters if the garage sits under a bedroom.

Seeing one before you buy it

Our Carlstadt showroom at 333 16th Street has real C.H.I. panels on display. Colour and woodgrain photograph badly — a finish that looks flat on a screen often has visible grain in daylight, and vice versa. Worth bringing a photo of the front of the house, the width and height of the opening, and whether the current door is insulated.

Service and parts

Being a dealer matters after the sale as much as during it. On an existing C.H.I. door we can look the model up and match sections, hardware and springs rather than fitting something approximate. That is the difference between a single-panel repair and being told you need a whole new door.

We also service C.H.I. doors we did not install. See garage door repair, spring replacement and new door installation.
