Garage Door Sizes: 8×7, 9×7 or 8×6′6″ — Which One Do You Need?

Residential garage doors come in a handful of standard sizes, and three of them cover most single-car garages in New Jersey: 8×7 (8 ft wide, 7 ft tall), 9×7 and 8×6′6″. We stock all three in C.H.I. insulated steel so you can pick one up the same day. Here is how to measure, which size fits which house, and what to do when yours is in between.

How to measure a garage door opening

1. WidthMeasure the finished opening from jamb to jamb at the widest point. Don't include the trim or stop molding.
2. HeightMeasure from the floor to the underside of the header. Check both sides — floors are rarely level.
3. HeadroomThe space between the top of the opening and the ceiling (or the lowest obstruction). Standard tracks need about 12″; a low-headroom kit works down to roughly 6″.
4. Side roomYou need about 3¾″ on each side of the opening for the vertical track, and 5½″ on one side if the door uses a torsion spring.

Round the width and height to the nearest standard size. A door is ordered or stocked at the opening size — an 8×7 door is meant for an 8-ft by 7-ft opening, and the weatherstrip and stop molding close the gap.

Which size do I need?

8×7 — the standard single door

The most common garage door in North Jersey, on everything from 1950s capes to new townhouses. If your opening measures around 96″ wide and 84″ tall, this is it. All four C.H.I. models in 8×7 are in stock, white and black, with or without windows.

9×7 — the wider single

Built on many 1980s-and-later homes and anywhere an SUV needs a little more room on each side. Opening about 108″ × 84″. We stock the 2283, 4283 and 5283 (white) in 9×7.

8×6′6″ — the low opening

Older homes, especially pre-war houses in Hudson and Essex County and detached garages, often have a 78″ opening. A 7-ft door will not fit without cutting the header. All four models — 2283, 4283, 5283 and 5983 — are in stock at 8×6′6″.

16×7 and 18×7 — double doors

Two-car garages take a 16-ft or 18-ft wide door, sometimes 8 ft tall. These are special order (usually a few weeks) in the same C.H.I. styles, plus Clopay and Wayne Dalton. Visit the Carlstadt showroom to choose the style on a full-size door.

Common size questions

My opening is 7′10″ wide — can I use an 8×7 door?

Usually yes. A door slightly wider than the opening is normal; the extra overlaps the jamb behind the stop molding. An opening more than about 2″ narrower than the door, or any opening wider than the door, needs framing work — text us the measurements and we'll tell you.

What if my opening is 7 ft tall but I only have 8″ of headroom?

Use a low-headroom track kit ($39 on any stocked door). It changes how the top section turns the corner so the door still opens fully.

Can I make a 7-ft door fit a 6′6″ opening?

No — the sections don't cut. Buy the 8×6′6″ door; it's the same price as the 8×7.

Do you install the door I buy?

Yes, usually the same day, with a free estimate and a 2-year parts and labor warranty. See garage door installation.
